WhatsApp introduces screen-sharing during video calls

Meta’s instant messaging platform, WhatsApp has introduced screen-sharing, a new feature that will see it compete with video conferencing platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams, among others.   The Chief Executive of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, announced this on Tuesday via a post on his Instagram channel. With this feature, users can now share presentations or documents during live video calls just as it is on traditional video conferencing platforms.   The feature, which was first released for some beta testers on Android in late May, can be accessed by tapping or clicking the ‘Share’ icon. Users can choose between sharing a specific app or their entire screen. This is similar to how screen sharing works on typical video conferencing platforms like Google Meet and Zoom.  WhatsApp said the screen-sharing feature has started rolling out on Android, iOS, and Windows Desktop in a phased manner. That means you may not see the feature immediately but should soon.  WhatsApp’s many new features  The screen-sharing feature is the latest of several features WhatsApp had rolled out since the beginning of this year in an attempt to build a multipurpose app. Just recently, the platform announced a feature that allows users to edit messages on the app.  Zuckerberg said with the feature, sent messages can still be edited 15 minutes after it has been sent. Before then, users had to either delete a message or send a correction in a separate message.  In another development, WhatsApp also introduced Chat Lock, a new feature that allows users to lock and hide conversations on the app. According to Zuckerberg’s explanation of the feature, Chat Lock will remove a chat thread from the app’s regular onscreen inbox and place it into a new folder that can only be opened by a password or biometric, such as facial recognition or a fingerprint.  Calling it “one more layer of security”, Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, added Chat Lock will protect “your most intimate conversations” and hide notifications from them. As part of its privacy package, Meta allows WhatsApp users to encrypt their backups, block the ability to screenshot and make their messages disappear automatically.  When a chat is locked, you can ensure that sensitive information and personal data in that conversation remain secure, even if someone else gains access to your phone. This level of control enhances your overall conversation security and protects your privacy.  Source: Nairametrics

Google strengthens Android 14 security to protect against cellular attacks

Google has published a blog post detailing the new security measures in Android 14 to protect users against cellular attacks. The new software gives users even more control over 2G network usage and other connectivity aspects that malicious entities could exploit to intercept voice and SMS traffic. To start off, Android 14 will allow Android Enterprise customers to turn off 2G connectivity on smartphones and tablets. 2G networks pose several risks and can expose users to Person-in-the-Middle attacks. That means 2G cellular network traffic can be intercepted over the air and decrypted using various nefarious tools such as False Base Stations (FBS) and Stingrays. While most major carriers have shut down 2G networks in the US, all existing mobile devices still support 2G. So when no other network is available, they connect to a 2G network automatically. However, as Google notes, this can be remotely triggered in a malicious attack. To avoid any security incidents owing to the risks a 2G network poses, Android 14 will let enterprise customers and government agencies managing devices using Android Enterprise restrict a device’s ability to downgrade to 2G connectivity. Google first introduced the feature to non-enterprise Android users with Android 12. The Google Pixel 6 was the first phone to allow users to disable 2G at the modem level manually. Since then, the feature has rolled out to all Android devices that conform to the latest radio hardware abstraction layer. More cellular protections in Android 14 Android 14 will also tackle the risks of cellular null ciphers. Google says cellular networks often fail to encrypt voice and SMS traffic to ensure confidentiality. The company points out that null ciphers have been used in commercial networks to expose user voice and SMS traffic (such as One-Time Password) to trivial over-the-air interception. Android 14 introduces a user option to disable support, at the modem-level, for null-ciphered connections. This means you can now choose to only use encrypted connections. Google says this functionality will greatly improve communication privacy for devices. “We expect this new connectivity security feature to be available in more devices over the next few years as it is adopted by Android OEMs,” says Google. 9 Must Ask Questions Before Registering Your Domain Name

Establishing your business online is a vital step in expanding your customer base by informing people of the goods and services you provide and giving them an easy way to contact you. Registering a domain name and creating a website is a huge component in getting this online presence established for your business in Nigeria. A domain name is used to identify a particular web page or URL, registering a domain name gives you access to use that URL for your website. Either an organization or individual can register domain names. But, before you go ahead and register your domain name, there are a few common questions you will want to ask. 1. Do I need a domain name? Only you can make the decision whether or not a domain name is an important component of your business plan. However, you will want to consider the potential for growth that registering a domain name and creating your website will have on your business. When people are looking for a particular product or service, almost all will begin that search online. If you haven’t created your website, you could be missing out on these potential customers. You may have a presence on social media platforms, which is an important component in creating your online presence, but there are limitations to what you may be able to provide on those platforms. Having a website lets you give detailed information about what you offer and, if you have an online store, customers can order directly from there. 2. Can a domain name help my business grow? Essentially, the vision you have for your business and its future should be reflected in the chosen domain name. A domain name like ‘www.weddingplanner.com’ is great if you only ever plan to keep your business focus on planning weddings. However, in the future if your plan is to broaden your scope to include a variety of event planning services, this may not be the most effective domain name to help facilitate that growth, and a more general ‘www.eventplanner.com’ might be a better choice. Setting out your business plan before you register your domain name can help you decide the best option for choosing the perfect domain name to help your business grow in the direction you envision. 3. Can someone take my domain name? If you pay for domain registrations, you become the domain name registrant and no one else can have that domain name unless you, as the domain holder, transfer domain ownership or sell the domain name to them. However, you will have to keep paying annually to ensure the domain registration stays in your name. If you don’t keep up with paying your renewal registration fee and renew your domain, your expiry date will pass and anyone else will be able to get that domain name registered in their name. If you’ve established a recognizable domain name, you will want to ensure that you’re renewing your domain registrations on time. Otherwise, someone else can take it, build their website on it and use all of the hard work you’ve put into building and establishing a recognizable domain name along with all the advertising and marketing tools you have invested in. Protection is available through domain locking, to prevent transferring your domain mistakenly. 4. What is the difference between a domain name and a website? The domain is the URL that users will enter to find your website. The website content still needs to be built once that domain is registered. Essentially, the domain name is like a notebook, and your website are the words and images you create to fill the notebook. The domain name, website name and business name can each be different or can all be the same, depending on how you want to set it up. ZBSS can search and register your .com or .ng domain name, so your website content can be plugged in. Creating your website content can be done using a web design professional, or on your own using an easy to use site builder. You can search for a free site builder or look for a paid plan with more advanced features. Your website content can easily be altered without impacting the domain name. If your customers are providing personal information or making purchases on your website, you will want to seriously consider using an SSL Certificate. This digital security feature encrypts data entered on your website, providing a layer of protection for a fairly nominal fee. Your website will still be operational without an SSL Certificate, however Google will warn your customers that the website is not secure, and you leave yourself and your customers open to being hacked. Google will also give a higher ranking to those websites that include an SSL Certificate over those who do not. 5. What is the importance of having a domain name? There are a few reasons why it’s important for your business to register a chosen domain. Perhaps the most important reason is that your domain name won’t have to change if you decide to change website hosting services, which is essentially where your website is parked and stored online. It is important to have consistency with your domain, especially if you have an ecommerce website, so that customers can easily find you and return using the same website name. If you think of your car as the website hosting company, the licence plate on your car is the unique domain name that identifies your car. Regardless of whether you buy a new car down the road, the licence plate always remains the same. So, if you decide to sign up for hosting using a different website hosting plan, your domain name would remain the same and would simply be transferred to the new hosting company. Another important factor in having a domain name is that it lends credibility to your business, where it is seen as more established and legitimate. When a business neglects to register a domain name, customers

7 Qualities of a Great Website

No single aspect of marketing is more important than a quality website, your organization’s front door. A “good” website isn’t good enough to break through and to convert users into engaged customers and brand ambassadors. What you really need is a great website. Thousands of pre-made templates and themes make creating a website easy—if all you want is a simple, off the shelf website that looks professional enough to give business a basic start. But to differentiate in today’s competitive landscape, you need a website as unique as you are. So, what makes a great website? 1.   Well Designed and Functional Your site reflects your company, your products, your services and ultimately your brand. So it’s important to be visually appealing, polished and professional. Allow white space, uncluttered layouts with quality photographs and graphics look and let your message shine through. (See examples.) Equally important, the site must work quickly, correctly and as expected. Build to web standards, proofread rigorously and test regularly for problems with speed or functionality. Every page should always be fast and functional, because any of them could be a potential customer’s first or only impression. Broken, slow, or poorly constructed areas will leave your visitors frustrated and encourage them to leave. 2.   Easy to Use Site visitors are always in a hurry. Don’t make them work for information. User Experience (UX) plays a key role in helping visitors use, understand and stay on your website. Create obvious, logical navigation with clear hierarchy. Use consistent layouts and visual cues for functionality across the site. Your site should satisfy both ‘searchers’—coming for something specific, and ‘browsers’—just looking. Help users accomplish their tasks quickly with onsite search, and keep them engaged by suggesting related content and minimizing dead ends. 3.   Optimized for Mobile Today there are no excuses, your site must look great and work well on any platform. The growth of mobile and tablet devices is not slowing down and you just don’t know what your next visitor will be using. Optimizing for mobile will improve both the experience of your visitors and your SEO Rankings. 4.   Fresh, Quality Content Be succinct, interesting and new. Use language that makes sense to your audience—avoid jargon, corporate speak and acronyms. Explain your “Why.” Visitors have short attention spans: spell correctly, be accurate, be relevant and update regularly. (Some tips here.) Blogs and social media updates are great ways to add fresh content, which keeps visitors returning and helps SEO strategy. Yes, keeping things fresh requires a bit of investment. No, you can’t do without it. 5.  Readily accessible contact and location Your audience won’t chase you down. Make it easy to engage, offer multiple points of contact: phone, email, social media and maybe an easy-to-use contact form. A Google map is a bonus. Above all, ensure that this information is readily available on an easy-to-find contact page—if not every page of your site. 6.   Clear calls to action If your site asks nothing of visitors, they will surely do nothing. What is the purpose of your site? Is that purpose clear to visitors? Even informational sites want visitors to read and share articles, follow the company on social media, download toolkits, join mailing lists or learn more about the organization. Include an ask on each page. 7.   Optimized for Search and the Social Web It’s not enough to build a nice looking website that’s easy to use. It needs to earn traffic. Otherwise, all that effort in design, UX and content development will be for naught. There are hundreds of rules and guidelines for effective search engine optimization, so here are a few to start with: Use page titles and meta tags on every page and alt tags on every image. Optimize content on your site to align with words real people search for. Use keywords appropriately in content and links. Use Cascading Style Sheets for layout and keep your HTML code clutter-free. Make it as easy as possible for visitors to share your content. Social can drive large volumes of traffic and positively impact your search ranking. Don’t forget obvious sharing links (even if they are rarely used in actuality). This is a high-level overview of seven deep topics! These basic tenets will help you start getting more value out of your web presence as you move toward the great website you need. For a deeper dive, contact us. Why Every Business Needs A Website

A business’s online presence, regardless of industry, can have a massive impact on its success. In this day and age, some businesses still don’t realize that a majority of their customers will visit their website before making a purchase. Having a strong online presence, particularly a website, can be make or break for generating more revenue. Yes, the quality of your website impacts results, but the purpose of this article to stress the importance of making sure you have a website. I’ve helped numerous companies of varying sizes create their digital presences. In some cases, organizations are hesitant to get online because they feel they are not tech-savvy enough and don’t understand how to manage a website. Other times, companies are concerned about the price. The good news is that there’s a solution out there that will work for you. If you still need convincing, here are the top reasons it’s important for your business to have a website: Credibility One of the main reasons you should have a website for your business is to increase your organization’s credibility. Chances are there are several providers offering a similar service to yours. One way you can stand out is by having a website that looks good and clearly communicates quality information to your consumers. Without a website, people may question your legitimacy as a business. Having a website is an opportunity to make a great first impression and give people comfort that you’re a real business. Brand Showcasing your brand to your prospective customers is one of the most important things that you can do. By clearly establishing who you are, what you represent and what you stand for, you increase the chances of your customers buying from you. This is also something that can set you apart from your competitors. Without a website, it can be incredibly challenging to do this because people can’t easily find quality and reliable information on your business. Leads Perhaps one of the most intriguing reasons to have a website for your business is because it can increase your chances of getting leads. Once people find you online, become interested in your product or service and want to know more, they’ll know how to contact you thanks to the information on your website, which gives you the opportunity to increase your sales. Even though websites have a cost, when used correctly, they have a positive ROI. Organic Traffic  Once you’re online and have an SEO-optimized website, you have a chance of showing up in Google search results. This means that when people are searching for a product or service, there is a chance your website will show up in the results. This gives you the opportunity to drastically increase your customer base. Saving You Time + Customer Service Many businesses get calls from prospects or existing customers asking simple questions about location and hours of operation. If you miss a call, the customer is left unhappy. Calls can also distract your staff from focusing on the most important parts of your business. A website can reduce these calls and increase internal productivity. At the same time, it helps customers find useful information without needing to call, which ultimately provides an all-around better user experience. Updates And Announcements Since your website is on 24/7, it’s easy to post updates and announcements to your customers. It’s a way to keep them up to date on everything that you’re doing. When something is particularly relevant to them, it increases the chance of you being able to upsell them. Digital Marketing If you plan on leveraging digital marketing to increase your leads and grow your business, you’ll likely want to drive traffic to a website or landing page. To do this effectively, leverage historic traffic that has been going to your website so you can target the most qualified customers and get the best ROI on your ad spend. This is something that can’t be set up retroactively, so it is best to get your website running early even if you’re not planning on running ads at the moment. Websites have become essential to business today. I strongly recommend creating one if you haven’t done so already. You can improve it over time, but the key is to start. Source: Forbes
